i get a lot of dms about how to interpret “empty”* houses (thread)

* doesn’t mean this area of life isn’t represented in your chart. you have ALL houses (and signs) in your natal chart.

e.g. unoccupied 4th house doesn’t mean you have no family life/childhood
so what to do?
before i dive in, what this can say is that, when a house is unoccupied it could be that in your life the main focus isn’t on the themes of that house but rather the occupied houses, especially if you happen to have a stellium (3+ planetary bodies in conjunction) (is rare)
but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask questions about the “empty” houses because that will always give you a more complete and in-depth picture of your birth chart.
so what to do when you have an “empty” house?

you look at the planet that rules that house.
i chose a table with modern rulers which i circled in red that i DON’T recommend you use and stick to traditional rulership (circled in green) when doing this interpretation
^ generational planets (uranus, neptune and pluto) move very slowly and apply to a whole generation thus their interpretation can be very impersonal unless they’re strongly aspected by your personal planets.
look at how that planet is placed in your chart.
let’s say you have 2nd house (finances, income, values) gemini. mercury rules gemini, so you look at your mercury to have an idea on how you handle your finances, what your values are, how your relationship with money is...
the rest is up to you to research! but to give you a few ideas;
easy aspects (trine, sextile and sometimes conjunction) can indicate easy flowing, supporting energy.
e.g ruler of your 2nd house, here mercury, trine jupiter can mean abundance of money or since -
your 2nd house is mercury ruled and aspecting jupiter your source of income may have to do with (higher) education, communication or travel.
or you may value knowledge.
hard aspects (square, opposition and conjunction in some cases) can indicate imbalance, conflict and hardship (but also dynamic energy) e.g following the previous example, let’s say this Mercury of yours receives a square aspect from Pluto. this can indicate a rather -
unstable income, you might fear losing money which could push you to hoard it or hide it (pluto rules underground) one moment then impulsively spend it the next. alternatively, plutonian themed topics (occult, death, crime, underground ressources) could be your source of income
