/10 To those who ask why this year is the worst for @UNRWA, here is a quick recap
/10 That @UNRWA is constantly in a financial crisis isn’t new: same every year, contributions do not match budgets
/10 @UNRWA never receives sufficient funds to cover all the services it should provide
/10 What is new is that for the 1st time in its history @UNRWA funding does not cover the cost of schools for 540K girls & boys, primary health care to 3.8 m refugees & assistance to 1.8 m absolute poor refugees
/10 2020: lowest income to @UNRWA since 2012 but needs have increased significantly bec/of multiple crises in the region incl #COVID19.
/10 Until 2018, the US were @UNRWA largest donor, circa 1/3 of its total budget
/10 The US defunded @UNRWA abruptly in 2018, in the middle of a budget year
/10 An outburst of generosity by many donors helped fill the gap in 2018 and avoid a crash
/10 This solidarity dropped in 2019: @UNRWA was at -230m USD, then -70m in 2020. Total: US$ 300 m less in 2020 than in 2018
