It's about to get very difficult for Canadians to see movies the same time as Americans. And you can thank HBO Max, and our wacky streaming options. A quick thread!
According to this new @Variety piece, studios are considering sending wealth of new titles to their respective streaming services: WB's GODZILLA VS. KING KONG to HBO Max, Disney's THE KING'S MAN to Hulu. Makes sense, given few U.S. theatres are open ... https://variety.com/2020/film/news/coronavirus-movie-theaters-release-dates-1234842520/
... but Canada doesn't have HBO Max. Or Hulu. And we don't get everything U.S. Netflix does. So far, some HBO Max stuff ends up here on Crave. But not everything, including WONDER WOMAN 1984, which will only be available at-home here after traditional 90 day theatrical window...
This is mostly b/c Warner/HBO Max has no financial incentive in boosting Crave's subscription base, nor does Disney/Hulu. Etc. But Canada's theatres are in just as bad a spot as America's right now ...
Which means that as more studios decide to write off Q1 of 2021 for theatrical releases and shift to streaming, Canadians will either have to become amateur SVOD detectives and figure out which Cdn streamer got which film's Cdn rights. Or wait (a while) for PVOD/Blu/EST release..
Or ... well, you know.
I yammered on about this back in the summer. But the frustrating reality for Canadian consumers is that in this alleged era of ultimate choice and easier-than-ever-access, legally watching the movies that you want to watch is that much more complicated. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/article-why-canada-isnt-getting-hbo-max-or-hulu-and-the-frustrating-paradox/
