“Honor Killing”:- a euphemism for extrajudicial killing to protect the reputation of a family. This is nothing but murders to exert power.

It hyperfixate on the reputation of women and girls, based on their compliance to strict rules around things like relationships, marriages,
life goals etc that men are expected to enforce on women and girls i.e fathers, brothers and husbands (even paternal and maternal uncles).

In an honour culture, a woman is considered more of her father's, brother's or husband's honour instead of an autonomous human being.
What constitutes the “honour”?

It's a socially constructed concept, and it's largely associated to social standing on the basis of moral behaviour.

In African, Middle-Eastern and South Asian, a male's honour is tightly intertwined with the chastity of his female relatives.
Immense moral value is placed on "virginity" and all of women's personal choices from what they choose to wear to her social life. This results in a loss of autonomy for women. Women are seen as naive, gullible, who incapable of making wise personal choices, meanwhile men are
seen as legal guardians of women, because they think men are the only one's who are capable of making rational choices and decisions.

Many women literally can't do anything in her life until they get a man's permission. They have to face harsh consequences if they don't follow.
Little girls are fed the idea since childhood, that their purpose in life is to be good daughters, wives and then mothers. Any acts of self-determination are deemed rebellious & immoral. Working women, women who divorce, don't marry or choose to not to have kids are frowned upon.
Victim blaming is deeply embedded in honour culture. Rape victims are dehumanized or brutually killed for bringing 'dishonour' upon their families. Women and girls are ordered to cover up, to shrink themselves, to avoid leaving the house, to not to be loud and outspoken in order
to prevent attracting men. Any woman or girls who doesn't abide by these values are seen as shameless and were told that they were 'asking for it'. Meanwhile, rapists aren't held accountable at all especially if they're family members. This is why many rapists are walking free.
Women being in love/relationship are heavily stigmatized, and are seen as taboos in honor cultures. But simultaneously men engaging in the same practices are approved and applauded. Other examples are like dressing immodestly, going for work etc. Women's choices that goes
against cultural or religious values, especially in regards to sexuality and physical presentation, are seen as dishonorable and worthy of gruesome punishments. Women and girls who live in countries/communities that practice honor cultures have to take cautious measures to not to
break any of those sexist and misogynist rules. Any sort of discovery can lead to dire consequences of honour-based violences.

The ideas around 'honour' go beyond any individual family: they are expressed by the whole community. Policing everything about women and girls are
central to the maintenance of order and hierarchy within these extremely patriarchal communities. Any families that are seen to be failing in this duty face extraordinary pressures. They can be excluded, even harassed, until they take some kind of step to restore their ‘honour’.
In many countries, the punishment for ‘honour’ crimes are inadequate or non-existent. They either don't recognize it as a crime or have insufficient sentencing for such crimes. And, in countries where laws have been passed to curb ‘honour’ crimes, such laws often go unenforced.
Nearly 5000 women and girls across the world are murdered and abused by their male relatives every year, for the behaviours according to them brought "dishonour" and damaged the "reputation" of families. Honour killing may not be in your culture, but the problem belongs to us all
We can't dismantle something without tackling it's pillars first. It's not an issue among few countries, it's an worldwide issue.

No women and girls will be free, if we don't dismantle patriarchy and one of it's by-product; honour culture.
