A few thoughts on why normal people are buying pickup trucks as family cars:

So many modern sedans have been ruined with some combination of a) horrible fuel-economy and safety mandate driven CVT transmissions, poor visibility, overly stiff suspensions and thin sidewall tires..
In a lot of the country with increasingly(?) poor infrastructure and roads they’re downright risky to drive downtown. Pickup trucks inherently give you a much more robust suspension/wheels/tires and a comfortable ride, even in spite of lead sprung rear ends intended for hauling
On the higher end MPG and Chinese-market centric regs have left ppl paying $60k plus for the “privilege” of a laggy turbo 4 banger in their German luxury sedan (with pothole prone wheels). You feel like you get a LOT more vehicle (and less depreciation) in a 4WD V8 crew cab truck
I recently went through this exercise myself. Newer Bimmers feel like Camrys to drive. What are you getting for your money? The most satisfying drive I had was in a new lower trim Hemi Ram that rode like a dream (coil spring rear end) and a engine/trans pairing to die for
The modern crew cab half ton is the classic American sedan rebodied: comfortable ride that doesn’t have you wincing over potholes, park it against the curb without ripping your bumper off. Roomy interior you’re not banging your head against a sloping roofline, huge trunk (bed)
