~5 years ago, I applied for a K99 and on the day of submission realized that Letters of Reference are entirely different from Letters of Support. That resulted in frantic scrambling to find additional letters for my application about an hour before the submission deadline
We got the letters but I felt like such a failure with the whole process and, it being my first NIH grant submission, I immediately started feeling like I wasn't going to make it as a PI and started considering whether I should pursue non-academic positions (admittedly I'm
a little dramatic lol). Today, I was able to stop a student from making the exact same mistake with her F30 application. It actually feels amazing to be able to help someone else avoid the meltdown that I went through lol, and it's a bit empowering too 😀
