"Defund the police" is not a "mandate." Most of the Black folks who took to the streets to protest do not support that idea.

It was mostly pushed by non-Black activists trying to out-woke each other and co-opt our moment of pain and anger.
I'm honestly upset that this has become the conversation. We could be talking about meaningful reforms in policing, instead we're having to argue about a dumbass slogan.

All because, again, mostly non-Black "progressives" felt like they needed to make this moment their own.
We now have a bunch of people who might have been receptive to police reform thinking that Black lives matter = defund the police. The approval rates of BLM suddenly dropped bc of that slogan.

You don't build coalitions this way. And you need coalitions to enact real change.
White progressives, especially online, seem to think that this is all a game of who can come across as the most woke. It's all performative. All big buzz-words. But you're not woke if you're not listening to us. This is not your conversation to lead.
