Blaming South Asian communities without understanding the inequities and circumstances that place folx at higher-risk for COVID-19, only serves to promote cultural stereotypes, perpetuate racism, and further ostracize communities.

Staying at home is a privilege.
Having benefits + ample sick leave is a privilege.
Having child/elder care is a privilege.
Adequate access to healthcare is a privilege.

Many of these should be basic rights, but that isn’t the status quo.

In July 2020, StatsCan reported a 20.4% unemployment rate for South Asian women. There is immense financial pressure being felt in these communities that can contribute to continued work leading to increased exposures during the pandemic.

A public health crisis shouldn’t be used to perpetuate racism. Instead of blaming racialized communities, try these strategies:

- understand unique inequities
- create safe working conditions
- culturally competent messaging
