One thing covid has made painfully obvious is how hopelessly addicted people are to societal norms.

OMG! KIDS ARE FALLING BEHIND!

Behind what, exactly? Some arbitrary point where our broken educational system decided it needs them to be so the assembly line keeps moving?

Stop.
There is no holy writ or sacred scroll or biological imperative that says fifth graders need to read at a fifth grade level because there’s no such thing as a fifth grade level beyond what we’ve just arbitrarily decided the fifth grade level should be.
Why does it exist? Because we need kids to graduate high school at 18 because that’s when we’ve arbitrarily decided they’re adults. But not really real adults because that doesn’t arbitrarily happen until they turn 21. And then they need to graduate college and start working.
There is absolutely no need for this nonsense. A kid should never be ahead or behind any made up schedule.

Do they understand this material? Cool. Let’s teach them this new stuff now, not because they crossed some imaginary grade line but because now they’re ready to learn more.
And that’s not even going into growing up being told you’re either slow, average, or advanced for your age and grade level. All these nonsensical, useless labels do is compare apples to aardvarks and cause lasting damage to a student’s sense of self worth.
Get told you’re slow, and at some point, you’ll just accept the lie that you’re stupid.

Get told you’re gifted, and you’ll end up with debilitating anxiety and crippling self-doubt to go along with your overinflated ego.

If you’re average? The system will never care about you.
So what if kids miss a year of school and just start back up again later? So what if it means they’ll graduate at 19 instead of 18? The world will keep turning. Kids will keep learning. People will keep developing.

And maybe, just maybe, we’ll stop believing in nonsense.
Covid has successfully busted the myth of employees needing constant managerial oversight and has shown working from home is not only viable but often results in more productive and satisfied employees.

Long-standing myths can be shattered. It’s possible.

But I’m a dreamer.
