Lots of talk on the timeline about whether or not #DefundThePolice is a “good” slogan or not. Lucky for you, on #MTVDecoded we broke down what the phrase *actually* means
My biggest issue w “ #DefundThePolice turns people off” argument is it suggests there’s some other magical phrasing more people would get behind.

Spoiler: it doesn’t exist. The same way folks continue to object to “Black lives matter” & co-opt “Say Her Name”
A slogan is just that. A slogan. not a TED talk or a dissertation. If someone wants to misrepresent it they’re going to.

“MOMS against drunk driving? so only moms care? What about dads?! What about siblings and grand parents?!”

You can’t fool proof a slogan for detractors
“It’s not a good slogan because so many people misunderstand it”

Your failure to do the BASIC homework to understand something isn’t the slogan’s fault.

Even so, ever notice how quick folks are to “misunderstand” a concept/slogan/idea when it comes from marginalized people??
A slogan’s job is to get your attention. No matter your feelings on #DefundThePolice it’s done that. Maybe it upsets you. Maybe it intrigues you. Take “Just do it” or “No Justice, no peace” for example.

the point is, a few words aren’t going to capture an entire movement/idea
Just the other day there was a post on the front page of Reddit complaining about the slogan “buy Black” the comments were FILLED with people arguing that the phrase alienates small business owners that aren’t Black & a “better” phrase would be “also buy Black” like. Y’all stop
Long story short, police violence is an enormous/complex issue many don’t understand. A slogan is just the entry point. That’s why we devoted the entire last season of #MTVDecoded to the problems with policing, so if you’d like to learn more please check out the attached thread! https://twitter.com/chescaleigh/status/1286104410452623360
