As an abolitionist, I get this question often and it’s a legitimate concern. So I’ll try my best to answer it. https://twitter.com/doxsburneracct/status/1334160554559229952
1. The police aren’t the Avengers. We’ve been indoctrinated with their reputation as crime fighters. Police spend the majority of their time responding to noise complaints, issuing parking & traffic citations and assisting road & highway repair.
On average, an officer makes fewer than two felony arrests in a calendar year (a fact). So Captain America they are not.
My grandfather was a dog breeder so I spent a lot of time around dogs as a child. When I fed all of the puppies from 1 bowl, there was a lot of growling & fighting. When I fed each one from their own bowl, there was peace. We don’t need more police. We need more bowls.
More bowls looks like better housing, better education, better healthcare, better mental health care, more jobs, better salaries, more recreational activities, etc. This is where the money in those police budgets should be going.
Will this eliminate every single act of crime? Of course not. Communities still need a team of responders (not police) who function like the police. Just without all the violence and surveillance.
