We just finished putting together the latest Wood Mackenzie Energy Storage Monitor report with @storage_ESA. In July, August and September there was *240%* more storage deployed in the U.S. than has ever been deployed in any previous quarter - shattering past records. (thread)
My research found that behind-the-meter storage has grown steadily for the last six quarters, even during the pandemic. But utility-scale storage was the real breakout star of Q3.
California drove a lot of this year's growth. More markets will turn to big storage projects within a couple years though – the project pipeline shows increasing diversity. We also expect behind-the-meter storage to expand soon in MA, NY, TX, FL, PJM and other markets
Overall, the storage market is really taking off this year, and will continue to climb. Our 2021 numbers will make 2020 look small, driven primarily by FTM systems. In 2025 we expect 7.5 GW of new storage to be added during the year – 6 times the expected 2020 additions.
