My tweet yesterday about applying to grad programs received a lot more traction than I was anticipating. I have decided to make a thread of some tips I think are generally helpful. If you have additional questions or comments, feel free to reach out.

My first piece of advice is to do your hw! I made a spreadsheet of programs that included program info, deadlines, website links, funding opportunities, cost of living, and faculty members that could be potential advisors. Will return to this last point. 2/n
This spreadsheet can help you narrow down options, as apps can be expensive. You can also look into waivers to help with the fees. This spreadsheet is also helpful to share with those writing your letters of rec to make their life easier. 3/n
Some universities have different requirements for personal statements. Make sure you check these out. I would customize the last portion of your statement to reflect why you’re interested in that program specifically, who you’d like to work with, and future goals. 4/n
Share your personal statements with those who are writing your letters of rec, so they have an idea of what you have discussed and how they can supplement your application. Again, you want to make their life as easy as possible, so they can focus on the letter itself. 5/n
Now back to faculty members. I would reach out to one or two faculty members of the universities you’re applying to. These should be people you can see yourself working with. Ask them about their projects and if they will be taking on new students. 6/n
Their responses will give you an idea of how you would work together, and if they seem interested in working with you, they can potentially help you get funding at the university. Apply to fellowships as well! They give you more freedom on your research. 7/n
Lastly, reach out to graduate students in the programs. Grad student emails are listed on the program website, and most would be willing to give some insight into the culture of the program and their experiences. 8/n
I can share my personal statements and spreadsheets to those who are interested. 9/9
