*sigh*

So please actually read the thread first because I'm responding, not summarising, and good-faith engagement means actually listening to our interlocutors.

Ok, here goes. https://twitter.com/ClaireShrugged/status/1334072748272914432
Yes, trying to identify out of marginalisation is a thing and yes, it can be painful to members of the community you're seeking to escape. I've been there.

But no, and I mean no, we do not make these statements about the complex inner lives of others human beings.
This goes beyond projecting or talking down, this is effectively colonising someone else's lived experience.

You been through shit, you go through shit, and that is valid. You're a woman living under patriarchy and that shit is painful and unjust.
But you do not own Elliot Page's experience. You do not get to name it.

Elliot Page has named it to us and the barest human decency demands we respect it. Forget allyship, forget politics, this is about humanity.

He is a human being and his being is his own.
From where you're sitting, does his experience look or feel similar to your own?

Cool. Fantastic. Marvellisimous.

It's not yours, it's his.

His life. His name. His body. His being.
No matter the feels it gives us when people in whose stories we are invested flip the script on us, we do not do this.

We do not plant flags in the lives of others.

We listen, we respect. I would add we love but we don't need to get into that today.
We possess no one's story, no one's identity, but our own.

No pain or politics gives us the prerogative to plant our flags in other people's souls.
