as a former fedex delivery driver and as the holiday season approaches, i just want to give a friendly little PSA on behalf of the delivery drivers in winter states who are about to be working 80 hour weeks to ensure you get all of your packages on time.
this season is WILD for delivery companies. there are a few things you lovelies can do to make your & the lives of your delivery folks easier as they are doing their very best to deliver your holiday gifts for loved ones and all of the other things youâre eagerly anticipating.
1. number your house CLEARLY. drivers are out in snowstorms, in the pitch black of night until 8, 9, 10pm sometimes. if your house isn't numbered clearly, especially if you live in the country and your driveway is a mile or six miles long, it makes their jobs almost impossible.
having numbers easily visible from the street makes life better for everyone-you don't have to worry about your neighbor getting your package or having to drive in yourself to pick it up, it will just arrive safely on your doorstep with no complications

2. if youâre expecting a package and it happened to snow the night before, please shovel a small pathway to your door if you are able. i traipsed through snow up to my thighs carrying 50lb packages before so i could leave them in a convenient location and then fell in said snow.
i had countless falls at that job because there was so much snow and ice on the ground between my van and the front door where i needed to leave packages, and a little ice melt on the ground or a little clear pathway to the door makes a world of difference.
3. be kind. i was appalled at how cruel people can be to their delivery drivers. but honestly, if someone went a little a above and beyond to be nice to me, it could make the worst day- after having to shovel my van out of another snow drift and getting bit by a dog- better.
this year, especially, is extra hard for everyone. december is now forever my least favorite month after spending four of them working for fedex during the holidays. itâs a really hard, stressful, dangerous, thankless job. please think of your delivery people this winter
