Why would the US prioritize the case of #OsmanKavala?

I can give you a five good reasons:

1. The "merits" of the case against him. #Kavala is innocent. His service to society immense. The case against him is a slipshod, malicious, embarrassment.
2. Opportunity. #Turkey appears to be looking for low-cost symbolic gestures that will win it some leeway with its Western allies. This is a good time to press that advantage.
3. Working with EU allies. The EU is likely to prioritize Kavala, who is more widely known there than in the US. This would be a place to make common cause.
4. He is being indicted along with a US citizen. In its current iteration, #Kavala's kafkaesque indictment ties him to a US citizen, @hbarkey. The case against Barkey is equally absurd. This gives the US greater buy-in than it does in other prominent HR cases in Turkey
5. US interests. The case against Barkey and Kavala is an absurdity wrapped in a conspiracy, inside a muddle. At its core is the idea that the US was behind the attempted coup in 2016. The US should be fighting this case b/c it promulgates that oft-told conspiracy theory.
