It hurts. After all the violence and death, not just this year, at the hands of police officers who don’t believe black people are entitled to dignity or life, the conversation isn’t even about our lives anymore. It isn’t even about us. It’s about white people’s feelings. https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1333922606014214147
Anyone who would walk away from a conversation about police brutality “because of a slogan” was never all that invested in real change. We know this. Obama does too. Just as he knows, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Rekia Boyd died while he was President.
ALSO, the intensity of this year’s protests came after every alternative had been exhausted. Like, sorry, President Obama but the policies enacted by your Justice Department after Ferguson didn’t do shit to keep George Floyd or Breonna Taylor or Elijah McClain alive and well.
Democrats couldn’t even wait for the “thank you black women!” confetti to settle before getting on the speakerphone and crying about how “defund police” cost them congressional seats. Baby, policing costs us LIVES. I’m not surprised but I *am* hurt, tired and insulted.
Police brutality isn’t a “hot button issue” or a “debate topic” for many of us. It is trauma, a well of deep pain. It lives in our bodies at the cellular level and wreaks havoc on our hearts. You can at least TRY to show some respect to our lived reality when discussing it.
Gotta LOVE that Obama always saves his tough talk and hard medicine for black people exclusively. Just gotta fucking LOVE it. So great.
