It's my new hobby to analyze the way Pete communicates 😂

Let's look at his response to Katie Couric about the "Defund the Police" slogan.

(Source: )
Pete does a few interesting things:

1) He doesn't debate the slogan. He focuses on the substance.

2) He says "If you talk to thoughtful figures in law enforcement..." This signals a willingness to listen and recognizes that there are well-intentioned people in law enforcement.
3) He describes how mental health services (which most Americans want) could reduce the need for policing. That's brilliant. He's highlighting common ground between racial justice activists, law enforcement, & most Americans.

4) Key phrases: "common sense" "it makes total sense"
5) He defines "good policing" as inherently linked to racial justice. If policing is not racially just, then it cannot be considered "good policing".

6) He emphasizes that accountability makes police more effective at their jobs.
How do you think Pete did?

Think about your family members or others who were uncomfortable with the slogan. What made them uncomfortable?

Do you think they would find Pete's arguments compelling? Why or why not?
