Battle Between Pulakesi and Harshavardhana

The two great emperors ruling the North and Southern parts of India - Harshavardhana ruled north India with Kannauj as his capital and Pulakesi ruled south with Badami as his capital.
Harshavardhana being very dominant saw a threat from a powerful rival in the south, he marched towards south India to expand his territory from Kannauj with a powerful and Mighty elephant force.

A decisive battle fought between Harsha and Pulakesi on the banks of River Narmada,
Harsha lost a major part of his elephant force and seeing the fierce efficiency of Pulakesi, Harsha accepted his defeat and retreated from the battlefield.

The Aihole inscription describes how the mighty Harsha lost his harsha (Joy) when he suffered the ignominy of defeat.
Pulakesi entered into a treaty with Harsha, designating the Narmada River as the border between the Chalukya Empire and the Harshavardhana Empire.

And after defeating Harsha Immadi Pulakesi earned the title of Dakshinapateshwara which means "The Lord Of The South".
