The UK authorization of the COVID-19 vaccine means we have access to a product label.

Two observations that I think media folks in the US should keep an eye on:

- The vaccine causes plenty of short-term side effects
- People aren't protected until 7 days after 2nd dose
Making people aware of both in a responsible way is going to be super, super important.

If people feel inconvenienced by a mask, are they going to feel the same way about the prospect of chills and fever?

And will they come back for a second dose if they do experience them?
And will people get their second dose and think they're immediately protected? According to the label, they need to wait at least another week. It's going to be super important that people know this.
I say this in the hopes of not having to read some nonsense in a few weeks about how the vaccine causes side effects that are "shocking," or having people think they're immune as soon as they get the 2nd dose.
To the people Tweeting at me saying that the side effects seem reasonable given the benefits of the vaccine...

... that's. the. point.

But if the only focus of many media stories is on the benefits of a vax, people get spooked when they learn of side effects.
Vaccine hesitancy is (and has been) a major concern. Irresponsible behavior during a pandemic is (and has been) a major concern.

Careful, responsible framing of vaccine information plays a role in combatting both.
