The myth of America, this story of our exceptionalism and dedication to liberty, hides a really disturbing past and reality: we have strong fascistic underpinnings. They’ve been there since the beginning, Trump has only emboldened them and encouraged them.

America inspired the fascist movements of the 20th century. We were linked directly to the Third Reich in ideology and laws. Burying and denying this has only allowed anti democratic sentiments to fester and grow, leading us to this point of crisis.

Now, after Trump has behaved like an authoritarian, after years of his movement embracing fascism and lusting after totalitarian power, after its all been drug into the light, people are trying to say it wasn’t that bad, that we’re fine because it didn’t happen.

Well, it’s happening. There is a strong fascistic movement in this country. They have numbers. They have an entire political party that’s either in step or fine enabling them. They have media and economic backing. It’s growing.

These conspiracy theories, this alternate reality with stolen elections, this is a recipe for fascists overthrowing democratic institutions. Do most people believe it? No. But enough do and enough are fine enabling them for power and profit.

Think about this: people were fine, including a recently pardoned general, who was an adviser to the president and a finalist for vice president, with calling for the Constitution to be suspended. They attached their name to it without reservation.

The point is this. There are those of us who have been warning about the anti democratic forces and threats. It’s not a grift. It’s not alarmist. This thing is building and building. We can beat it back, but we’re doomed if we don’t recognize the reality of this situation.
