There would always be jobs for DRs in the UK. But the reality is that it has become much more competitive. The reason is obvious, everyone is taking PLAB (Indians, Pakistanis, Nigerians..)the supply is abundant. How can you start improving your chances at getting a job early? 1/
Ensure your CV/ NHS profile is solid. Avoid errors and make it as well packaged as possible, include every relevant detail. Seek help, send it to as many people as possible to help review them. Your profile/CV is what qualifies you for interview, do not undersell yourself.2/
Try to do an audit or a quality improvement project back at home. Participate in a published research, package your final year project well. This is going to really boost your NHS profile/CV . About Audits ⬇️ 3/ https://twitter.com/emmy_dann/status/1295253229794660355?s=20
Apply to as many junior doctor roles as possible and start early, unless your qualifications are stellar (which is uncommon), don't be selective about location for your first job. Don't be choosy with the specialty, you can always switch after getting some UK work experience.4/
Besides working with the NHS, there are a good number of private Health org, apply to them early on if you can, not after so many months of waiting for a NHS job. And interestingly, some would pay you even better and give you time to pursue an online masters/study for exams 5/
If you can afford to stay an extra month or two after your Plab2, applying for a clinical attachment is a good idea. it gives you UK(NHS) experience. Most NHS Trusts would not charge a fee for this. I've been told of people that were employed where they had clinical attachments.6
Additionally, ALS (Advanced Life Support) and ATLS certification by the RESUS UK council is taken seriously here, having that would improve your chances to a good extent. you can also plan this around your exams, but slots are hard to comeby now , and it's not inexpensive. 7/
If you get the opportunity to start residency at home, please start it. It looks good on your CV, gives you a higher bargaining power. Besides working in a big (or relatively big) hospital setting with lots of specialists is advantageous, I know this for a fact. 8/
Take your interviews very seriously, you aren't the only one being interviewed for the role. Please get good internet network. Glo messed up my first😭 ( disconnected more than 6 times). Practise thoroughly with your friends , be confident and cheerful (you got the stuff!) . 9/
Avoid having too many clinical gaps, it gives the impression that you might be out of touch with clinical practise, but don't be deterred if you do. Don't be unemployed when applying for a job. Get some hospital work even if it's to volunteer. 10/
Agencies can be helpful with getting a job, but not significantly for junior doctor roles. There is really no harm in sending them your CV sometimes anyways but do not let this stop you from applying yourself. Join Facebook pages, people make connections from there. 11/
In my opinion, God's favour is most important. Some do really little and get a job very easily while it's the opposite for others.
