Real Madrid’s current plight is so strange, I just can’t pin down the issues. It’s so weird, that almost everyone’s opinions on the subject, are, well, kind of the truth in some way. Whether you want to blame Florentino, Zidane, or the players - they’re all to blame in some way.
Florentino’s unwillingness to spend this past summer was crucial. When you win a title, miraculously, you need to understand that the squad and 1st team needs additions to freshen up the ideas, to give it new ways to prosper. They earned nearly €100m, but didn’t bother spending.
But his unwillingness to spend wasn’t only last summer. Even during the 2015-2018 period of success, you still need to regularly add players to continue improving. Sometimes you need to remove players, who have full stomachs, and replace them with younger, able players.
Now, we find ourselves so far behind. We want Mbappe and Haaland, honestly, that might just be the start, because the squad needs a major overhaul which could have been gradually achieved, instead, they now need to spend big in the next two or three summers to sort this mess.
You buy youngsters but you hire a man who wants ready made stars, who know how to win, and don’t need babysitting. You know the formula, you know that a world class squad + Zidane gives you titles. But we’ve gone for a different approach, do they now stick to this youth approach?
If you continue with the youth approach, you risk mediocrity for many years, while waiting for them to develop properly. Did Florentino accept that we’ll be mediocre for several seasons, when he went all in with the youth project?
Now onto Zidane. His stubbornness and his lack of in-game adjustments, are frustrating at times. He’s partially responsible for sure, but does it all rest on him? How do we play awesome patterns and look the part against Barcelona at Camp Nou, but can’t replicate that vs Alaves?
But no one can tell me he isn’t tactically aware. This is the bizarre bit, we’ve played some excellent football with Zidane in the past, we’ve scored 100 goals in a season with Zidane in the past, so what’s changed? He can’t all of a sudden be tactically incompetent, surely not?
He’s at fault for not accepting Reguilon, Hakimi, James, Llorente and others, but since when is it wrong for coaches to prefer certain players? Every coach in history has sold players they shouldn’t have, clubs hire a coach for their ideas, and you have to accept what he accepts.
The players that he has and trusts. Sure, he’s not using certain players as much as he should, he’s not rotating others as much as he should, he’s not ignoring others for poor performances as much as he should. He’s stubborn, and has his favourites for particular jobs and tasks.
But the players aren’t repaying him for his faith, even the ones who he blindly trusts. Players like Varane and Marcelo, continue to make unforgivable errors, but don’t get punished. These are basic errors which shouldn’t need coaching for a 27 year old and a 32 year old.
His return rested on three new additions: Hazard, Pogba and Mbappé, while recovering the likes of Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Casemiro, Kroos and Modric from their woeful 2018-19 season.

Out of which, Zidane got one, Hazard, who is yet to feature in four games in a row for Madrid.
When your main player and project signing, the one who you bank on to make the difference in tough moments in difficult games, isn’t consistently in the team, it’s very difficult. Not to mention players like Fede who he’s worked on and improved loads, is out. Carvajal is crucial.
Ramos is in and out, without him, the back four crumble. Casemiro hasn’t been the same since being drunk vs Manchester City, at this point, we look better when he isn’t on the pitch than with Casemiro, that’s how bad he is. Then there are players who aren’t good enough for Madrid
But, then the argument that “we shouldn’t need signings to beat Cadiz, Alaves and Shakhtar” which fans are using, is correct and valid too. I can’t disagree with it, because we should be good enough to win against a Ukrainian side’s B team.
In conclusion, there are so many valid opinions about this situation Real Madrid is in, and honestly, everyone is correct to some extent.

It’s just such a difficult phase, and although I don’t want Zidane gone, I want him financially backed, ultimately I want my club to thrive.
