imo the big problem with “defund the police” is that defunding the police is a bad idea — austerity is bad, public services are good, policing is important, and better policing will be more costly than bad policing not cheaper
On the politics there is some retroactive forgetting here but what happened is that a lot of mainstreamish liberal groups briefly hopped on the defund bandwagon and that become a lever for GOP attacks.
But like if defunding the police was actually a good idea then maybe having the Sierra Club and various state NARAL chapters endorse it would also have been a good idea.
But it’s not a good idea and I seriously doubt these groups thought it through.

This seems to me to be not primarily about the 2020 election but about letting social media vibes and a vague desire to be good allies override critical thinking about policy and the nature and purpose of issue advocacy groups.
