The lack of fitting profiles hold the entire team down, as it complicates the ball retention in midfield too, since Shakhtar can press without consequences.
This was also confirmed by the Shakhtar coach in his post match statements. They were unconcerned about our wide play, and focused mainly on shutting down central progression. They targeted Modrić and Ødegaard, and nullified them.
With runners in the team, runs like these would have been made, forcing Shakhtar to drop down, opening up space for the midfield to progress the ball.
Currently, all players want the ball to feet, which allows Shakhtar to compress space between the midfield and attack, which makes it virtually impossible to create chances. Too many players trying to receive, too few making runs in-behind.
There are multiple problems at Real Madrid right now, but the lack of profiles in attack is one of the main issues. The reason why players such as Mbappé and Haaland are perfect targets isn’t just because of their quality, but also because of their profiles. #rmalive
