He signed up in Montreal in February 1915, and was sent to the Western Front in September. In June 1916 he had a near miss when a shell landed near him during fighting around Ypres, but the incident, and the exposure to the elements, took a toll on his health.

He was sent back to the UK for treatment, eventually arriving at No. 12 Canadian General Hospital in Bramshott, where his conditions fluctuated. At one stage seriously ill with nephritis, by the beginning of December 1917 he appeared to be making a recovery.

His file, available from @LibraryArchives https://bit.ly/39AuaWc records he was "feeling much better and wants more to eat", and on the 6th Dec he was "up in a wheelchair" and requesting pork and beans. His recovery was short-lived, and he died in hospital on Christmas Day.

Bramshott (St. Mary) Churchyard, seen here in 1926, contains the graves of 318 Canadian soldiers from the #FWW, many of whom, like William, died in hospital. William's parents however were able to request that his body be sent home for burial in Alloa, where he lies today.
