And we're off - @KathleenStokes introducing @mapalljohn and his work on @iHabiMap, Smart Bogs, and the metric tonne of other research on earth observation and peatlands that John is involved in!
John was a Covid hire, and he kicks off his talk here by paying homage to the weirdness of interviewing during Covid and the humble pigeon, precursor to drone image collection 🦅 (alas, no pigeon emoji)
John begins with an intro to his really cute rehomed @DogsTrust mascot (missed the screenshot of that slide 🥲 but she's gorgeous), before giving us a brief overview of his talk, 20 years of experience in #EO, and a bit of background on peatlands as carbon storage
Now we're getting an overview of how relevant peatland carbon store is in Ireland - John's work shows upland deep peatlands higher carbon storage capacity, and the importance of peatlands in discussion of carbon storage more generally
Not to hate on the Amazon rainforest and discussion of it - but peatlands are where it's at carbon storage, even if they've been left out in the cold...
