There are a lot of opinions about Elliot Page. Some of them are pretty bigoted and sucky. Up until fairly recently, trans was more of a hypothetical to me. I value inclusion and equity and respect for people but I didn't think I knew anyone who was trans. https://twitter.com/TheElliotPage/status/1333820783655837701
First of all, turns out I did. Second, a small but strong group of trans folx in Wausau shared their challenges and it made me realize that I had to be more than just personally accepting.
That's not enough. I need to listen. I need to collaborate on policies that keep this community safe and allows people to thrive. I need to open the door so other people can learn and grow and be more accepting.
If you are someone who is making a joke about Elliot Page, maybe think about why. Are you uncomfortable? Do you need to learn more? Is Elliot the first trans person you've known? Your reaction is more about you than Elliot. Think about why.
To Elliot and everyone discovering and sharing their true selves, congratulations. Good luck. It's going to be hard sometimes but you have a lot of support.

I've had a lot of people reach out to me today sharing their own family stories. It goes to show you that publicly supporting people matters. It matters to them. It matters to their families. It matters to our community.
They were private messages so I blurred out their info.

We are all in this thing together. Sometimes the words come out wrong but if we act sincerely and with humility we will get there together.
