I need people to understand how terrifying and sad and scary what is happening in the UK is for trans young people there and for trans people around the world. Please read and raise all the alarms that you can.

Yesterday a court ruled that trans youth under 16 and possibly all trans minors likely cannot consent to gender-affirming care even where they (1) request the care; (2) have the support of their parents or guardians; and (3) their doctor deems it necessary.

Though the decision will be appealed, as a result of the court ruling puberty suppression care that young people have been receiving and care that they have been waiting for potentially for years has begun to be cut-off and appointments cancelled.

This care is deemed medically necessary, safe and effective by every major medical association BUT has been the target of a massive attack of misinformation from people with large platforms in the UK and the US and now the result is that youth are losing their lifeline.

In the US, we can expect this to further motivate state lawmakers who are already proposing criminal bans on health care. In the UK, we can expect some wealthy families to find care elsewhere, for others, the consequences will be dire.

Behind the rhetoric of trans contagion, of "transgender crazes", of "irreversible damage" are thousands of young people who have found a home in their bodies, who have had a chance to live and imagine adulthood, who have been given breath after years of panic and pain.

This pubertal suppression care has been used for decades to treat precocious puberty, it has been used for years to successfully treat trans youth. It has changed a generation of trans young people. The joy it has brought is intolerable to those who would like to see us suffer.

Please see this for what it is - an attempt to weaponize our happiness, our hopefulness, and our love of our bodies. This is a dangerous attack on trans survival and it is spreading. Follow @Mermaids_Gender for ongoing updates. I will provide updates for the US.

Please don't let this fade into the background of your consciousness. Imagine if the care you needed to get through the day was cut off in an instant because someone who wrote a children's fantasy book successfully exacerbated an already deadly campaign against you.

This is not about free speech. This is not about experimental treatment. This is about medically approved care that saves lives. There is so much wrong with all aspects of our medical systems and care delivery. The problems don't stop and end here but this is a five alarm fire.
