why the @feminist account on Instagram is extremely probelmatic
The Instagram account @feminist has over 6 millionfollowers and is run by two businessmen, Jacob Castaldi and Tanner Sweitzer, Founder and Director of Social Media, two men “responsible for creating and managing a network of over 10,000,000 followers of Instagram communities.”
Some other large activist accounts run by Sweitzer and Castaldi include @chnge, @march and @itsfeminism on Instagram
They treat these accounts (and their activism) as a business, focused on gaining a mass following and using their publicity to discreetly market their sustainable clothing company CHNGE, where Castaldi is the Founder and Sweitzer is the Chief Marketing Officer.
CHNGE has used “paid media shares” to promote their account, attesting that even Instagram is profiting off these accounts
Majority of their feed is reposts from artists, graphic designers, other activism accounts, artists and twitter threads and while they profit off the work of marginalized folx from their huge following. What do these creators get?
I run an activism account and a painstaking amount of effort goes into making one post from research to designing so I know how much these effort other creators put into their work only for it to be exploited and profited off by two businessmen under the guise of "activism"
Sweitzer and Castaldi don’t care about feminism. They care about expanding their brand. Men should be Feminists but a movement for the liberation of women, poc, queer and trans folx should be lead by women, poc, queer and trans folx
