I have a small following on here, but if a huge amount of people from an extremely vulnerable community told me they were hurt by something I did, I would listen. Irrespective of my own feelings & if I wasn't ready to respond I would let them know I was listening & reflecting
We have a legacy in this country of protecting power &privilege at all costs. Of prioritising the feelings & positions of people with agency, influence&power over those that are most at risk. To the point we are quicker to defend & listen to those that cause hurt, than those hurt
Telling people that express hurt & dissapointed that they're attacking or piling on completely invalidates their experience&voice, which is far too often ignored in media. They're spoken over by people with platforms&then portrayed as the aggressor when trying to protect themselves
When this happens from people we trust, people that understand the struggle & oppression it hurts even more. If you're advocating for discourse, for empathy, to assume food faith in people, please offer those things to the people most hurt asell as your friends and colleagues
The only people that should talk about the experience of any marginalised group are people with lived experience. & yeah I see the hypocricy in writing this but it's on all of us to hold our friends, colleagues & those in positions of power to account when they speak over them
