It's bleak, but for a band like us who don't expect to make any money from music anyway, Spotify has done more good than harm. We stayed off there for so long, but I have little doubt that if we hadn't caved, we'd still be at the point where only our mates listened to this band.
The money per stream is fucking terrible, but CDs are a dead format, cassettes are a novelty and most people only buy vinyl for albums they completely LOVE. Streaming is how people listen to music now, and as much as I love Bandcamp, it's extremely clunky for streaming.
The priority for me is getting our music heard. If it got to a point where we could make a wage from music, that would be nice . But it's a pipe dream, and I'm at peace with it. The idea of us doing anything more than selling 300 copies of a record and breaking even is laughable.
I don't know if I'm being particularly coherent here, I just think I'm wary of telling people they're bad music fans for using Spotify, when it's literally just the norm. "No ethical consumption" etc.
