Interesting Tale of Sela Pass, Noora Post & Jaswant Garh

along with the beautiful scenic routes, these mountains have some interesting stories/folklores associated with them - something I learnt from my driver on my way from Tawang to Dirang. #ArunachalPradesh

“Sela Pass” Connects Tawang to Dirang and on descent towards Tawang falls an army post called “Noora Post” which is followed by a place called “Jaswant Garh”.

The names Sela, Noora & Jaswant are actually real characters of a story..

(2/10)
It was 1962, Indo-Sino war. Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat - a soldier from 4th Garhwal Rifles - was posted at Arunachal, the then North Eastern Frontier Agency (NEFA).

The PLA of China twice received defeat for their intrusion by Indian Army during The Battle of Nuranang.. (3/10)
During their 3rd intrusion Chinese were firing using MMGs on the post (21km from Sela Pass) of Jaswant Singh and but he with two more riflemen (Triloki Singh and Gopal Gusai) gave PLA a tough fight - holding & defending the post despite being asked to vacate..

During Jaswant Singh’s deployment at the post a local girl called Sela use to cross his post. This is when the love affair of Jaswant Singh and Sela started.

another narrative says Jaswant Singh had affairs with both Noora (Sela’s Sister) !
(hmmm.. quite a lover boy 😉)

It was November of 1962, both the fellow Riflemen of Jaswant Singh were martyred, but he kept showing his mettle & engaged the huge PLA single handedly !!
He kept changing his location, firing from different angles, creating a delusion of a bunch of soldiers still there !

(6/10)
During his one man army act, Sela & Noora supported him with food and at times fired at Chinese army as well !

The Rifleman Jaswant Singh with Sela and Noora fought a brave battle for 72 hours killing more than 300 PLA soldiers !!

(7/10)
Eventually, Jaswant Singh and Sela were martyred during this battle and Noora was captured by PLA and taken to china - she never came back..

Another narrative says their dad leaked details of Jaswant’s post; resulting in that..

Also, some say, Sela jumped off the cliff.. (8/10)
Nonetheless, it was because of their valour Indian army managed to put a check on PLA which was marching forward towards Baisakhi Post !

well, that was the saga of the mountain pass & lake named after “Sela”, the adjoining post after “Noora” & “Jaswant Singh Garh”

(9/10)
For his valiant act, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was honoured with Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), the Second Highest Military Decoration. His Unit (4th Garhwal Rifles) was awarded with Battle Honor Nuranang..
