I’m Sinhala Buddhist & I’m tired of arguing with racists all the time about why Sri Lankan minorities deserve way more from the government. I can’t imagine how exhausting it must be actually being a minority in Sri Lanka. I’m so sorry you guys, wtf
The fact that I can’t relate to the struggles of LK minorities is systemic privilege in itself. I get called a race traitor for aligning with minorities. But I have to. If you hold a position of privilege it becomes your duty to use it. There’s no freedom until we are all equal.
I think a lot about the fact that I never have been nervous at a police checkpoint, because my name isn’t Tamil or Muslim (even before 2009). I’ve never gotten the 3rd degree at the airport. These are compounding micro aggressions for minorities we so easily take for granted.
I’m tired of having to tell people again and again how equity for all races & religions is not the erasure of your own religious or cultural freedoms. I was taught “us vs them” & it took me so long to unlearn it. All I can say is that I’m sorry & I will speak up whenever I can
If you want to extend to solidarity to Sri Lankan minorities, you don’t have to be an activists to make an impact. Start questioning your own biases, talking to relatives/friends who have problematic views & why they feel that way... there are so many ways to do better
