The #GivingTuesday thread nobody asked for and even fewer wanted. But today was a RIDE and there are some things to be said and some to learn. I'll take heat for this, but some like it hot . . .

My thoughts on GT have evolved. No secret early on I was an eyeroller (1/x)
Simply put, it is a global phenomenon that drives tremendous results and any charity that isn't participating is potentially missing out. Donors like it and they give. BIG. Huge driver for new donors, increased giving, recurring . . . we'll see the stats (2/x)
in coming days, but all preliminary results show that this is going to be a big year. And last year was record breaking. Once I started digging into digital trends, you just simply cannot ignore the impact #GivingTuesday has around the world (3/x) . . .
This year, I got to see it from the inside of a number of orgs, large to small, and here's what I saw . . . I saw a lot of fundraisers working really hard to make today a good campaign. Many built great build-up streams, developed case, told a good story (4/x) . . .
Invested in infrastructure and did GOOD work. I saw one brand new DoD, only in the job, heck in fundraising, for about 5 weeks, just absolutely NAIL IT on their campaign. Saw another org push out a whole, brand new social stream on how their beneficiaries give (5x) . . .
The stories are endless. Did you see @charitywater's campaign? WOW. (And I take heat, a lot, for being a donor but their donor journey is unparalleled, just genius. And I believe in clean water, so . . . ). And I saw board step up and launch P2P & FB campaigns (6x) . . .
And . . . the most important thing . . . a lot of money was raised that's gonna do a LOT of good. Hungry people fed, kids taken care of, animals rescued. AND, on some level, the world came together for a day and did some good. IF the intent of @GivingTuesday is (7/x) . . .
IS to take one day to pause and celebrate the good of giving & all that's right in the world, then based on the volume & energy I saw today, it works. And anything that celebrates good and positive and giving deserves to be celebrated and honored, ESPECIALLY (8/x) . . .
When it goes to make positive change. And goodness knows we could all use some positivity in 2020.

Were there a lot of bad emails? Sure. Probably. Did I get a bunch from orgs I haven't heard from since LAST GT? Yup. Were there some poorly executed campaigns? (9/x) . . .
Sure. But overall? Overall a lot of people around the world came together and tried to shine some light and make something positive. Are there "better" ways to fundraise? Of course. More efficient, longer-term, more sustainable - possibly. But #GivingTuesday (10/x) . . .
gives a lot of folx the encouragement and motivation to give, to fundraise, to ask and the momentum is absolutely unavoidable. So, I'm raising my glass to @GivingTuesday, the phenomenon, and the celebration of the joy of giving. And to everyone who worked SO HARD (11/x) . . .
today and allowed themselves to dare and to hope and to give and honor what's good and right and honest. I say bravo. I say "here's to giving!"

But a reminder: Tomorrow? Tomorrow has GOT to be #ThankingWednesday! {fin}
