I've been wondering for a while what qualifies as BL vs. queer media, because I think the definitions vary from person to person. Is BL generic romance between two guys that would be interchangeable with het romance? Is queer media about queer issues? Because some BLs are both. https://twitter.com/nadaobraincells/status/1333707842159734785
Like, by those definitions, I'd say SOTUS leans more BL and SOTUS S is more queer media. The conflict of SOTUS isn't overtly queer-oriented, but the conflict in SOTUS S is all about Arthit's fear that being a mlm couple will inhibit Kong's quality of life in the future.
I'd say DBK and UWMA walk the line between BL and queer media. They both address things like same-sex marriage legality and the various approaches to coming out to family and friends, but their respective plots (jealousy/reincarnation trauma) aren't super queer-oriented.
I'm curious if there's a universally accepted definition of BL, because I don't want to paint the entire genre as mindless fluff and disrespect the creators – queer and otherwise – who put sincere effort into creating stories that respect queer people and experiences.
