Dr. @comilla_s of Lakewood is working with communities around the U.S. to improve care for COVID-19 patients. That means teaching low-tech tools, like the ABC test: (THREAD)
“If they’re walking in their room for one minute and then they have to sing their ABCs, if they can’t finish that one-minute walk test, or if they can’t make it through their ABCs, that probably means they need to be seen by somebody,” she explained on @ColoradoMatters
“YOU can do that phone call to Grandma and say, ‘Grandma, I want you to do this simple walk test with me while I’m listening to you on the phone singing your ABCs’"
She said it's helped doctors identify people with severe respiratory distress who didn't know they were in danger

Also some words of warning to those of us in our 20s and 30s:
She's seeing young patients “who literally 4 weeks ago were running 5Ks or running around with their kids… and COVID actually destroys their lungs so much that they’re discharged home on oxygen”

As an ER physician, Dr. Sasson treated Aurora theater shooting victims in 2012. She says both the shooting and the pandemic are “mass casualty events.”
But the pandemic is different, “We’re in this marathon and we’re sprinting right now, and the finish line keeps moving"

She shared the heavy emotional burden she takes on, caring for COVID-19 patients whose friends and family can’t visit the hospital, and she shared what’s giving her hope.
