There’s a type of person who likes to interact with self-help/life resource stuff, and this person 100% *knows* they have the answer to everything. It’s: “Why don’t you just...?” Why don’t you just clean your house/do something you physically can’t/make your brain work different?
Because they really think it’s as easy as that! THEY can “just” do whatever, so obviously EVERYONE can “just” do whatever! That’s how it works, right?
Reasons people can’t “just” do stuff like cleaning include: mental illness, disabilities, trauma, lack of access to specific formative knowledge, poverty, racism, classism, and on and on. Just because it doesn’t apply to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist!
Just like it helps to think before you mock a consumer good, “Does this design I find ridiculous actually help make things accessible to disabled people?” also try, “Is there a reason some people might not easily be able to do the thing I’m mocking them for not easily doing?”
