2. One of the biggest fears I have is that the academy uses an institutionalized, curricular approach to teaching, which overstretches you, prepares you for a career in the 1950s, and leaves no time for skills that actually help you prepare for life after graduation.
3. To be clear, time spent building your craft is incredibly important.
However, degree programs are so packed with coursework, there's no time for additional learning.
That means you likely have to take career development matters into your own hands..usually after graduation!

5. Master Social Media
Pick one, (Blog, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Pinterest, Instagram, the new thing, etc.) completely understand the platform, and use it as a marketing tool to build a following. 6. Develop a music adjacent skill and build a community.
Gain skills in teaching, audio/video recording, web design, etc., and engage with a community of performing artists. Developing an expertise that supports your art opens up opportunities to sustain yourself financially.

7. Create a chamber ensemble (band) and start performing.
Do NOT become a non-profit.

9. In order to be successful in this, you have to do three things:
1. BE PATIENT, your following will not occur overnight.
2. BE FLEXIBLE and open to new opportunities that present themselves.
3. REDEFINE what success means to you.

10. NONE of this is easy and having a career in music is tough, no matter how successful you are.
With that said, the most successful people I've seen are individuals who can successfully blend their artistry with marketing related skills!
