a masterlist of tone tags and tone indicators! (THREAD)
before we start, know that not all neurodivergent people need tone tags. **THIS IS ONLY A LIST OF THE ONES I HAVE COME ACROSS. NOT ALL OF THEM ARE MANDATORY.**
you might’ve seen this picture floating around. i’m the original creator! i made a thread a few months ago but i was misinformed and uneducated on the subject and subsequently deleted it. heres the picture you can download for quick reference!
/j - joking
this one is self explanatory, and one of the most commonly seen. it can relieve a lot of people’s stress when used correctly.
/hj - half-joking
also self explanatory. when you’re joking, but.. also kinda not.
/s - sarcasm
another widely used one. a lot of people (like myself) have a hard time understanding sarcasm, especially through text. simple tags like these can help us out! (but, not all neurodivergent people need them. its best to ask, or read their carrd if its in there)
/srs - serious
used in a serious discussion. PLEASE only use this as such. i’ve seen way too many posts using this instead of a /j thinking it would be funny. it’s not.
/p - platonic
/r - romantic
personally, these are incredibly helpful. i have a hard time deciphering if an “i love you!!” from a friend is platonic or not, and i’m sure others feel the same.
/l or /ly - lyrics
a lot of lyrics are abstract and difficult to understand on their own. ive seen copied and pasted lyrics on my timeline and spent 10 minutes trying to decipher what they meant before i realized they were just from a song.
/t - teasing
self explanatory! its a good tag to have when you think your friends are genuinely being rude. can be replaced with a /j
/nm - not mad
this might be my favorite tag out of all of them. a simple /nm can relieve so much anxiety. in my own experience, when i get a stern reply or an @, i think the person is angry with me and start to freak out. /nm just lets people know you’re not upset with them!
/neg - negative
/pos - positive
these two are also, once again, self explanatory. a lot of phrases can be taken both ways based on how you look at them, and these tags help. for example, a phrase like “i’m crying” could be in response to a funny tweet, or them seriously crying.
/lh - lighthearted
used in a teasing way, very much like /t and /j occasionally. again, not all of these are mandatory, this is just a list of tone tags so you know what they mean when you see them.
/nbh - nobody here
another good one. sometimes i’ll see a tweet on my timeline that looks a lot like a subtweet of me and i start to freak out. /nbh is helpful in reassuring me that its not anybody they’re mutuals with, and therefore not me.
/m - metaphorically
/li - literally
two more self explanatory ones. they’re exactly what they sound like
/rh - rhetorical question
self explanatory. you can use this when you really dont need an answer to your question.
/gen - genuine question
a very popular one. “what does this mean /gen” is a good example of this tag being used. it could be taken as both rhetorical or genuine, and tags help differentiate the two.
/hyp - hyperbole
self explanatory!
/c - copypasta
ill occasionally see a very vague or upsetting tweet that ends up being a copypasta, but i had no idea. /c is just a small tag at the end that lets me know the entire thing is a joke and i dont have to bend over backwards to understand what it means.
/sx or /x - sexual intent
/nsx or /nx - non-sexual intent
im not sure if i need to get into this one. quite a lot of these are self-explanatory
/th - threat
used when you’re threatening someone. i’ve never actually seen this tag used, but it exists and i’m putting it here.
/cb - clickbait
another one ive never seen, but i’m going to put it here as well. i’m pretty sure its used as a warning for youtube videos and such?
/f - fake
/g - genuine
another self explanatory one! both of these are usually used in screenshots, obviously differentiating whether or not they’re real or fake.
i hope this helped you! if you have any questions feel free to comment! for reference, i’m autistic, so i’m only speaking for myself in this thread. if you are neurodivergent and don’t need these, thats great! this is just for those that might and want to educate themselves. :]
