AYAs are individuals 15-39 years of age, have been defined by @theNCI as population w cancer distinct from children and older adults

Cancer in AYAs has been a growing problem, and current treatment and management frameworks often fall in between pediatric and adult frameworks.
AYAs often note represented in cancer clinical trials. Work from our coauthor and mentor, Archie Bleyer:

In the USA, clinical trial accrual at initial cancer diagnosis is only 0.1%, and it's even lower for AYAs https://twitter.com/NicholasZaorsky/status/1192853426603999232
In this work we assessed trends in incidence in AYAs. Overall, we found that the rate has increased by ~30% from 1973-2015
The majority of patients were female (59%) and white (80%). The proportion of patients diagnosed with cancer increased with increasing age at diagnosis. Carcinomas made up plurality of diagnoses, especially in older AYAs.
Work from @CAonline shows improvements in 5 year survival for AYA cancer patients.
However, survival improvement lags behind adults and peds, and the difference is more dramatic in USA vs Europe

And even for patients who are cured of disease, there may be long term sequelae of treatment, e.g., risk of heart disease
