I joined the SNP aged 16 in 1985; I also joined the YSN (as it was then called). Even then, there was SNP members that treated the YSN with barely concealed contempt and only saw us only good for leafleting fodder. https://twitter.com/CailynMcMahon/status/1333740967929778179
Many of my contemporaries in the YSN & FSN are now MSP's, MP's, Councillors and one now even FM. I was fortunate enough to part of the YSN when it was fully affiliated to the SNP with representation on the NEC.
It is fills me with sadness that today there are party members that treat our Party's Youth organisation with the same contempt. During the 2014 referendum I remember the invaluable assistance that both YSI and SNPStudents gave in Rutherglen and Cambuslang.
They have been at the forefront of every election campaign that I can care to remember. Their contribution to the success and popularity of the SNP is second to none.
To achieve independence we need the votes of the younger generation and it is the YSI and SNPStudents that will be instrumental in delivering these votes. Dismiss them at your peril.
They have helped shape the party to be a party of fairness and equality, a party that I am immensely proud to be a member of. Keep up the good work.
For the record; I was an apprentice lift engineer when I joined the SNP & YSN. We also raised our own funds back then as they do now.
