Who to hire 1st 🥧: Hire hybrids who are experts in either product marketing, growth marketing, or content, and a near expert in another. This isn’t a T-shaped person, it’s more of a π-shaped person. Usually start with the product marketing/growth marketing π-shaped marketer. 2/6
Flexibility w/in marketing ❄️: No 2 marketers are the same. Roles like social can report into growth, content, or brand. Most important: Be flexible, know the goals for each role, & match them to the appropriate leader. 3/6
Flexibility w/in company ✏️: Not all marketing roles need to report into marketing. Collaboration, alignment & dotted lines are key here. I.e. Sometimes a central design team that includes marketing & product design works best. That said, I don’t suggest pmm report to product 4/6
📤 If you’re too focused on finding someone that fills a box (or a circle in my diagrams), you’ll miss out on the best people. The best marketers I’ve hired at early-stage companies have a truly unique set of skills and think outside the playbook. 5/6
