Who to hire 1st : Hire hybrids who are experts in either product marketing, growth marketing, or content, and a near expert in another. This isnât a T-shaped person, itâs more of a Ď-shaped person. Usually start with the product marketing/growth marketing Ď-shaped marketer. 2/6
Flexibility w/in marketing : No 2 marketers are the same. Roles like social can report into growth, content, or brand. Most important: Be flexible, know the goals for each role, & match them to the appropriate leader. 3/6
Flexibility w/in company : Not all marketing roles need to report into marketing. Collaboration, alignment & dotted lines are key here. I.e. Sometimes a central design team that includes marketing & product design works best. That said, I donât suggest pmm report to product 4/6
If youâre too focused on finding someone that fills a box (or a circle in my diagrams), youâll miss out on the best people. The best marketers Iâve hired at early-stage companies have a truly unique set of skills and think outside the playbook. 5/6
