as a psychotic person I think it’s really important to know how to NOT react when someone tells you they have psychosis or are on the schizophrenic spectrum, so here’s a thread on just that.
Rt if you can.
Here’s a carrd I made on schizophrenia and schizoaffective, it tells you a lot about psychosis if you’re interested! https://psychoticdisorders.carrd.co/
Do not: laugh. I’ve had people look at me when I say I have psychosis, and just.... laugh. Do not do that. That’s weird, you look weird, it makes me feel weird and its not?? Funny??
Do not: tell me i can’t be psychotic because I’m lucid/not currently trying to climb up the walls and hatchet murder you. Just because I’m not having a psychotic episode at all hours of the day does not mean I am not psychotic
Do not: tell me I’m a “person with a psychosis related disorder” and not “a psychotic person”. Don’t ostracize me from my disorder because you can’t handle that I have it.
Do not: ask me what I see/hear when I hallucinate. That’s none of your business
Do not: ask me what im delusional about. I used to be convinced that if I told you I think the government is tapping our house alarms, you’d join in on the scheme against me
Do not: tell me none of it is real and everything is peaches and cream wonderful. Discouraging delusion doesn’t make it go away
Do not: (in reference to kinning) tell me I am not a fictional character, and that I just “kin” them. I don’t kin Hannibal lecter. There are periods of the day where I think I am Hannibal. “Oh but he’s a murderer” yes well my schizophrenia doesn’t choose who I think I am
Do not: tell me it’s all in my head. Yea, no shit.
Do not: try to joke with me that “someone’s watching me” or “ill be under your bed tonight” I will believe you and you are going to end up having to take me to the psych ward, and you don’t want that.
Do not: encourage my delusions with phrases like “wait! Hearing voices isn’t normal?” or “you hear them too?”
Do not: tell me I don’t look psychotic. Well, just because I don’t fit your Hollywood serial killer version of a psychotic person doesn’t mean I am not.
Do not: try to argue with me about what I’m seeing or hearing. I really do not give a flying fuck that you “don’t see it so I shouldn’t either”
Do not: ever tell me to snap out of it. I literally can’t
Do not: try to fix me yourself. I do not want to be fixed, I’m fine with having schizophrenia. I know that must come as a shock to you but not all of us are deeply ashamed of our disorders
