Suicide within the Police is on the increase. Unfortunately Policing is a job that takes its toll on people. Sometimes you know it’s affecting you, sometimes you don’t.
Often the continuous exposure to grief and trauma has an affect later on in life, and comes as a surprise. 1/
We aren’t always best placed to see how the job affects us. And on top of exposure to things, we can encounter attitudes and behaviour from our colleagues/supervisors that affects us too.
Bullying happens, it shouldn’t, but sometimes it does and it can be devastating 2/
Some Officers won’t feel able to talk about it. Some won’t trust the organisation to protect them if they seek help. Will be afraid of the stigma attached to having a mental health illness.
They suffer. Alone. In silence. 3/
Sometimes Officers will find that they’re no longer able to function as they once did. No longer able to process the jobs and incidents. No longer able to put up with bullying.
Some will put up with a lot for a long time. Then pop. 4/
I think we owe it to everyone suffering to speak up. To talk. To offer help. To be there to support them.
Break down the stigma. Be the change.
