The editors at Nursing Clio have been debating how to monetize the blog ever since we launched back in 2012. And it has been a debate, my friends. Over the years we've "argued" over using ads on the blog. We decided against that because many of us had ethical issues with it.
We've thought about and were offered a few affiliations with academic organizations. We decided against that too because we always want to be able to write anything we wanted to without fear of repercussions.
Over the years, we've even had offers from magazines to become folded into their publications. For me, this was especially tempting! But ultimately, we decided we wanted to always maintain editorial control.
We eventually landed on Patreon because, like many other wonderful and independent publications out there (Contingent Magazine and Lady Science), a crowd-funding model would allow us to keep editorial control and become a reader-funded publication.
In the past 8 years, we've cobbled together a team of 15 editors who work voluntarily to bring you 2-4 essays about 50 weeks out of the year. It's an incredible amount of work, but for now, it is a labor of love. We recognize the professional benefits of being an editor for NC.
So our goal in launching the Patreon is not to pay ourselves, but to pay our writers! Every week, we publish innovative work from professors, public historians, grad students, undergrads, and people outside of academia.
We've published amazing series such as Beyond Florence, Killing Clio, The Deathbed, Run Like a Girl, The Power of Protest, & more. We want to continue to grow & take on new writers and new projects. So, apologies for the long thread, but for as little as $3/month, you can help!
