I'm not sure what's going on with @Gothamist @WNYC but they love to use pictures and information from #keepNYCschoolsopen events without mentioning the event or that we even exist, really đŸ€”đŸ§ /thread
Especially weird because @ByJessicaGould knows exactly who I am and how to reach me but didn't think it was important to talk to one of the original organizers of the parent-led movement that actually kept NYC schools open before she went on this show?
For example, on Nov 19, #keepNYCschoolsopen had a huge protest in front of City Hall. It was the day after the school shutdown was announced. We had a lot of people and a ton of press. Picture of the protest 👇
Hey David! If you want to send me a fruit basket or something to thank me for gathering all your sources into one spot for you to conveniently interview, DM me! Or next time just, like, *mention* how you magically found all these parents in one spot. Symbiotic relationship, dude.
I guess @Gothamist, whose entire beat is NYC and has THREE education reporters, had more important stories to cover that day than the fact that 300,000 kids were unceremoniously kicked out of school and their parents were protesting that?
Last Sunday @NYCMayor announced that elementary schools would open Dec 7. This was a HUGE reversal and shocking news to everyone. @NYCMayor admitted that it was parent voices that convinced him to reopen.
Because this is the biggest education story there is right now, @Gothamist covered it. Do you think they reached out to any of the parent organizers in #keepNYCschoolsopen? Do you think they even mentioned the fact that schools were open because parents furiously organized?
So: I don't know what I did to these guys. But I have to say that the lack of coverage by our local media is kind of surprising to me. But maybe it shouldn't be? @alexanderrusso @karenvaites /end
Oh and a coda: I don't care whether @gothamist or @WNYC covers us. But I think we all have to realize who and what is getting covered and who and what is being left out.
