Holy shit. In August 2020, @txsecofstate found a bug involving the security of ES&S voting equipment used throughout the US, including its DS200, DS850, DS450, ExpressVote, & ExpressVote XL.
HOW WAS THIS KEPT HIDDEN ALL THIS TIME? 1/ https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/forms/sysexam/brian-mechler-ESS-exam-report-EVS6110-aug.pdf
2/ The report further states that jurisdictions should perform the hash verification themselves, but instead ES&S personnel have been performing it for them. WTAF???
3/ The report says that the "ES&S hash verification process has been a growing concern over the past few certification exams. In this exam, their customer relations with regard to this process have also become a concern...[T]hese issues have been communicated in detail to ES&S."
4/ The report then states that the analyst "WILL NOT recommend certification of future ES&S releases unless they make substantial improvements .... to their hash verification process."
5/ The question remains whether this "bug" in ES&S voting systems throughout the US was remedied with a software update less than two months before the 2020 election and, if so, whether the update was certified by the Election Assistance Commission. This is a huge story.
6/ P.S. For those who don't know, ES&S is America's largest voting machine vendor. Per a 2017 Wharton report, it accounts for about 44% of US election equipment & Dominion 37%. https://trustthevote.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/2017-whartonoset_industryreport.pdf
7/ But ES&S's control is larger, and Dominion's smaller, than the Wharton report (and @VerifiedVoting's verifier tool) suggest.
8/ Both Wharton & @VerifiedVoting put all Diebold equipment in Dominion's column bc Dominion bought the intellectual property rights to Diebold equipment. But ES&S kept most of Diebold's servicing & maintenance contracts, which is where the control over elections comes from.
