My experience with people who suddenly decide to become religious has usually been those that become overly zealous and isolating in their approach or those who experience burnout and revert to their old ways after a short period of religiosity.

It's often the ones that don't have knowledge that are quite concerning. When people begin judging others under the guise of piety without knowing what is and isn't the case it leads to fanaticism and in some circles outright takfir of others.

Finding a spiritual guide is so important because they should assess where you are and take you accordingly. Jumping into the endless ocean that Islam is most certainly purifying but the ocean can overwhelm even the best of swimmers.
