5. Anytime you are issued ANY TAX DOCUMENTS, those same documents are sent to the IRS. W2, 1099, 1098-T, 1098-R. Anything with weird numbers and letters also got sent to the feds. If you’re not filing forms you received that the IRS DID receive, you’re going to get audited.
6. Same thing goes for claiming forms that you didn’t receive. I’ve seen illegal preparers put education credits on people’s taxes that they don’t qualify for and now you owe the IRS and is disqualified for claiming that credit in the future even if you do qualify.
7. If you usually get an IPPIN it didn’t get lost in the mail. The IRS isn’t sending them out until early January this year. If you need to change your address with the IRS, do it YESTERDAY.
8. Get your affairs in order. Get your student loans out of default. Dept of edu gave back SOME offset refunds last year due to Covid, I HIGHLY doubt we get that lucky again.
9. Stop looking for a CPA or having it set in your head that you need to file with a CPA. Accounting and tax preparation are not the same thing and most CPAs don’t even prepare taxes. You can also check the IRS website to see if your tax preparer is even registered with the IRS.
Last thing. If your preparer needs your AGI from last year to file your taxes THEY ARE NOT REGISTERED WITH THE IRS TO FILE TAXES. You will be held personally accountable for everything that’s on that tax return.
